It’s no doubt that the holidays are known for fantastic food with the cookies, sauces, pasta, bread, salads, etc. Yet sometimes brussels sprouts get a bit of a bad rap with people. All they need is a little love and a few extra flavors to really make them shine. This dish brings brussels sprouts from mushy and gross to sweet and delicious. What’s the trick? Cranberries and Maple Syrup. (If you couldn’t tell by the name of this post 😉 )

The cranberries add a pop of freshness and a ton of color to the brussels. Since people eat with their eyes first, it only makes sense to invite them in with the warm reds and bright greens. No coincidence that those are typical Christmas colors! Not to mention the cranberries burst with flavor as they cook. Every time you bite into one, it’s full of juicy goodness that complements the brussels sprouts. And since they go with most holiday dishes, it makes this side the perfect match for your meal.

Easy side dish brussels sprouts

Being a Vermont girl at heart, maple syrup was an obvious choice for me. Heck, I’ll put that on everything if I could. A little amount goes a long way with brussels sprouts. It’s subtle and really helps the veggies shine through. It’s easy for brussels sprouts to be bitter so adding a little maple syrup, agave or molasses reduces that and turns them into a crowd pleaser in a heartbeat.

And talk about easy! This whole thing took all of 15 minutes and it’s pretty hands off making it simple and stress-free when you have a lot going on in the kitchen. I’m all for low-stress cooking, especially during the holidays. So finding and creating recipes that come together quickly and only take a few ingredients are always in my arsenal. With only 5 ingredients, these Maple Cranberry Brussels Sprouts let you enjoy the day outside of the kitchen and gives the whole family a refreshing side dish full of veggies.

  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Instructions

  1. In a dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the brussels sprouts to the pan and saute for 5-7 minutes. Don't stir too much, you want them to create a crust on them.
  2. Add the cranberries. Cook for another 4-5 minutes.
  3. Add in the maple syrup and balsamic. Cover and let cook for another 5 minutes until it reduces slightly.
  4. Serve warm and enjoy!
